Church of St Andrew

The Church of St Andrew is one of the traditional parish churches of Murcia's historic centre, located in Plaza de San Agustín, in the San Andrés district. The present church was originally the conventual church of the Augustinians and has housed the parish of St Andrew since 1886. It has a Latin-cross plan, with side chapels between buttresses and a raised choir at the west end; its central nave, one of the largest in the city, is covered by a barrel vault with lunettes divided into seven bays. The crossing has a dome on pendentives and two near-semicircular apses holding large altarpieces. Inside, frescoes by Pablo Sístori are preserved, with architectural perspectives and rocaille motifs. The Arrixaca Chapel, square in plan with a semicircular apse, has a dome on pendentives decorated with Baroque plasterwork of plant motifs. The façade, completed in 1762, is laid out like the front of a palace and reuses two red marble Roman columns framing the doorway, which is presided over by the image of St Andrew, with a relief of the Virgin of the Arrixaca above. Notable items in its collection include the Romanesque image of the Virgin of the Arrixaca (12th-13th centuries), the former patroness of Murcia, the titular St Andrew and a St Roch (1757) by Francisco Salzillo, adoring angels by Antonio Dupar, a St Monica from the circle of Nicolás de Bussy, and 17th-century paintings attributed to Senén Vila.
