Place de la Concorde

The Place de la Concorde is the largest square in Paris, covering 7.6 hectares, located east of the Champs-Élysées. Its centre is occupied by the Luxor Obelisk, a 3,300-year-old Egyptian monolith 23 metres tall, a gift from Egypt to France in 1829. On either side stand two monumental fountains from 1836 designed by Hittorff: the Fontaine des Mers, representing the seas, and the Fontaine des Fleuves, the rivers. Eight allegorical statues of French cities surround the square, along with columns bearing lamps. On the north side, two neoclassical buildings by Gabriel house the Hôtel de la Marine and the Hôtel de Crillon. The square was the setting for the French Revolution, with the guillotine installed there and the executions of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Today it is a partially pedestrianised space and hosts events such as the 2024 Olympic Games.
