Synagogue of Córdoba
A small Mudéjar building on Calle Judíos, number 20, in Córdoba's old Jewish quarter. It is the only Hebrew religious architecture preserved in the city. A foundation inscription found in 1884 on the east wall dates it to 1314-1315 and attributes its completion to Isaac Moheb. After the expulsion of 1492 it served as a hospital, a hermitage and a school, and at the end of the 19th century it was declared a National Monument. You enter through a courtyard and a small vestibule into the prayer hall, which is square and no more than 40 square metres. Its walls are covered with stucco work featuring interlaced designs of eight-, six- and four-pointed stars, plant motifs and Hebrew inscriptions, mostly verses from the Psalms, which were originally painted blue, red and black. On the east wall is the heichal, the niche for the Torah scrolls; on the south wall is the women's gallery, with three small balconies.
