Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba
The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba is a building that combines an old mosque and a Christian cathedral, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Inside, the hypostyle hall preserves the rows of two-tiered arches that were an architectural innovation repeated in the later Muslim extensions. The building also houses a richly decorated mihrab and maqsura, added in the 10th century, as well as a bell tower that was originally a minaret. Today the complex still functions as the cathedral of the Diocese of Córdoba and Mass is celebrated there daily.
