The University of Coimbra, founded in 1290 and one of the oldest in Europe, has occupied the former royal palace on Alcáçova hill since 1537. The Paço das Escolas is arranged around a courtyard presided over by the 18th-century Torre da Universidade, and brings together the Joanina Library, the Capela de São Miguel and the Sala dos Capelos. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013.
