National museum housed in the former Episcopal Palace, at the top of Coimbra. It is named after the sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro and brings together sculpture, painting, goldsmithing and decorative arts from the Middle Ages onwards. Beneath the building is preserved the Roman cryptoporticus of ancient Aeminium, an underground gallery on which the forum was built.
