Joanina Library
CultureVisit: ~30 min
Baroque library of the University of Coimbra, built between 1717 and 1728 on the commission of King John V. It has three rooms linked by arches, shelves of painted and gilded wood, and painted ceilings. It holds thousands of volumes from before the 19th century. To protect the books, a colony of bats hunts insects at night, and the tables are covered when the library closes.
