Pfunds Molkerei (Pfund's Dairy)

The Dresdner Molkerei Gebrüder Pfund was founded in 1880 and its building at Bautzner Straße 79 dates from 1891. Its walls, floors and ceiling are covered with some 248 square metres of hand-painted tiles made at the Villeroy & Boch factory, in Neo-Renaissance style. The motifs include historical scenes and slogans, and tell the story of the Pfund brothers. It survived the Second World War almost intact, and heritage protection saved it during the GDR era, when the dairy was expropriated and production ceased. After refurbishment it reopened in 1995, and in 1997 the Guinness Book of Records recognised it as the most beautiful dairy in the world. Inside there are also enamel signs and old advertisements. Today it works as a cheese shop and delicatessen, but you can go in just to see the decoration.
