Brühl's Terrace (Brühlsche Terrasse)
Brühl's Terrace is a promenade of about 500 metres on top of Dresden's old city wall, beside the Elbe, upstream of the Augustus Bridge. It was part of the fortifications and was rebuilt after the Schmalkaldic War (1546-1547). It takes its name from Count Heinrich von Brühl, minister to Frederick Augustus II, who built a town palace here around 1737 and in 1747 received the whole terrace from the elector. In 1814 the Russian military governor, Prince Repnin-Volkonsky, opened it to the public, and the architect Gottlob Friedrich Thormeyer built a staircase at the western end. On that staircase stands the sculptural group "The Four Times of Day" by Johannes Schilling. The complex, which includes the Academy of Fine Arts and the Albertinum, was destroyed in February 1945 and rebuilt; it is known as the "Balcony of Europe".
