Unicaja Joaquín Peinado Museum
The museum occupies the former palace of the Marquises of Moctezuma, a building of the 16th to 18th centuries that mixes Mudéjar, Renaissance and Baroque elements, in Plaza del Gigante, between the Palacio de Mondragón and Santa María la Mayor. It has two courtyards with Tuscan columns that support the balconies of the upper floor. It opened in 2001 and is run by the Fundación Unicaja. Its permanent collection brings together more than five hundred works, including paintings, drawings and prints, by Joaquín Peinado, the painter from Ronda (1898-1975) linked to the School of Paris. The rooms follow his career: biographical introduction, Mexico, the 1920s, the 1940s, geometric abstraction, pro-forma art, drawings and graphic series, and the 1960s and 1970s. Since 2012 there has also been a permanent room devoted to Pablo Picasso, with pieces from the Fundación Unicaja Art Collection, and a temporary exhibition room.
