Almocábar Gate
The Puerta de Almocábar was built in the 13th century in the southern sector of the Muslim medina and was one of the main entrances to the city. It led into the Barrio Alto, today the Espíritu Santo district. Its name comes from the Arabic al-maqabir, "cemeteries", because it opened next to the main necropolis outside the walls, as was Islamic custom. It consists of a horseshoe arch between two semicircular towers, which housed the guard. In the time of Charles V the complex was remodelled and, in the mid-16th century, a square access block with a battlemented Renaissance doorway was added in front, on whose semicircular stone arch you can see a large royal coat of arms held by an imperial eagle. On the other side, outside the walls, lies Plaza de San Francisco, where the Castilian troops camped in 1485 before the capture of the city. The gate was restored in 1961.
