Ancient Roman Salting Factory
This is a Roman fish-salting factory discovered in 1995 on the site of the former Teatro Andalucía. Part of the factory is preserved intact in the basement of the new building, in the Central Market area. It was built next to an arm of the old canal that linked the bay with La Caleta and operated until the early 4th century AD. It was organised around a large courtyard with an underground cistern, where graffiti appeared, some of it related to the lighthouse, which is now displayed in the Museo de Cádiz. The part open to visitors preserves covered tanks of different sizes, made of hydraulic concrete, with the corners reinforced against leaks and a central hollow for cleaning. The entrance is on Calle Sacramento, at the corner with Calle Barrié, and access is not adapted. Leaflets are available in Spanish and English, and there is an audio guide.
