Zaragoza Lonja
The Lonja is a Renaissance civil building of the 16th century, built in the first half of that century as a merchants' exchange. It stands in Plaza del Pilar, next to La Seo and the Town Hall, and is one of the most outstanding examples of its kind in Aragon. Its interior is organised into three aisles and five bays covered with star-shaped rib vaults. It was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931 and a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in 2002. Since the 20th century it has worked as a municipal exhibition space, and since the mid-1980s it has been devoted solely to that use. The whole building is on one level, with no steps. As it has no permanent collection, the interior is open only when an exhibition is on; the exterior can always be seen from the square.
