Stone Bridge

CultureVisit: ~15 minFree

It is the oldest bridge over the Ebro in Zaragoza and a Gothic work of the 15th century. Its construction began in 1401 under the direction of Gil de Menestral and continued until 1440. Floods on the river forced it to be restored on numerous occasions, so its present appearance combines repairs from different periods. At the ends stand four bronze lions by the sculptor Francisco Rallo, unveiled in 1991, which give the bridge its popular nickname. It links the old town, next to Plaza del Pilar and La Seo, with the left bank of the Ebro, and from its roadway you see the river façade of the Basilica del Pilar head-on, with its towers and domes. It is crossed on foot and is one of the most photographed places in the city.
