Zagreb Cathedral
The Cathedral of the Assumption stands in Kaptol, the episcopal district that rises opposite the Upper Town. The diocese was founded in 1094 and the first church, Romanesque in style, was finished in 1217; the Tatars destroyed it in 1242 and over the centuries it was rebuilt in Gothic style. The 1880 earthquake brought down the main nave and the architect Hermann Bollé directed the neo-Gothic reconstruction that gave it its current appearance, with its two towers. Inside there are Baroque altars, a pulpit by the sculptor Mihael Cusse, a neo-Gothic high altar and a Walcker organ acquired in 1855. The sarcophagus of Blessed Alojzije Stepinac is also kept here. Around it you can see remains of the walls that the bishops built in the 15th century against the Turkish threat. The 2020 earthquake knocked off the top of the south tower and forced the removal of the north one; restoration work is still under way.
