Church of San Isidoro

CultureVisit: ~30 min

The parish of San Isidoro belongs to the group of churches organised in Seville right after the Christian conquest of 1248. The present building was raised in the mid-14th century in the Gothic-Mudéjar style and was remodelled in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, with further changes in the 18th. It has three rectangular aisles separated by ten square-section pillars supporting semicircular arches, much altered in the Baroque period, and the central aisle is covered with a Mudéjar timber roof with lacework (lacería). The high altarpiece is presided over by a canvas by Juan de Roelas from 1613 depicting the death of St Isidore. In the Chapel of the Cristo de la Sangre there is a 14th-century Gothic crucifix, one of three of this type in the province. The doorway on the Epistle side, preceded by an elongated vestibule, bears a Star of Solomon. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest) in 1995.
