Church of Santiago
Romanesque church on Praça do Comércio, in Coimbra's Baixa. Work began before 957, when a document donated it to the Lorvão monastery; it was rebuilt in the last decades of the 12th century, in the reign of Sancho I, and consecrated in 1206. In the 15th century a square chapel was added to the north, and in the 1540s another church was built on top of it for the Misericórdia, removed in the restorations of the first half of the 20th century. In 1861, when the present Rua Visconde da Luz was widened, much of the south apse and the main chapel was lost. It has been a National Monument since 1910. The main portal has four archivolts and capitals with plant and animal motifs, such as facing birds. The south portal, probably from the late 12th century, has undecorated archivolts and a vine-shaped moulding. The interior has three aisles and three chapels in the chevet.
