University of Granada Botanical Garden
A small garden belonging to the University of Granada, between Calle Duquesa, Calle Málaga and Calle Escuelas, next to the Faculty of Law, on former orchards of a Jesuit college. Its origins are linked to the Enlightenment, with the date of 1783 and the work of Mariano del Amo y Mora around 1840. It preserves the original layout of the Botanical School, with 14 beds corresponding to Jussieu's 14 classes of flowering plants, so it can be compared with a botany textbook. There are also floricultural, medicinal and aromatic plants, ornamental species introduced into Granada, climbers and hedges. Notable specimens include a ginkgo planted in 1889, the most representative, a pagoda tree recorded in 1856, a Virginia persimmon, a Canary Island pine and cypresses near the fountain. The 19th-century railing and the entrance on Calle Duquesa, with reliefs of the botanists Cavanilles and Lagasca, are also noteworthy.
