Central Market of Athens (Varvakios)

Food & drinkVisit: ~60 min

This is Athens' municipal food market, next to Athinas Street, in the city centre. Its neoclassical building dates from the late 19th century. It is organised around a large hall of butchers and another of fishmongers, with stalls of spices, cheeses and pickles in the surrounding area. The vendors shout their wares, and Athenians still do their daily shopping here. The tavernas nearby serve patsás, the traditional tripe soup.
