Convent of Santo Domingo
The Dominicans founded their first convent in Cádiz here in 1639, on the spot where the Anglo-Dutch attackers of 1596 had thrown the image of the Virgin of the Rosary. Work on the complex began in 1645, partly funded by the Basque merchant Domingo de Munárriz, and the church was finished in 1666. It has a Latin-cross plan and three aisles, and was partly rebuilt after the fire of 1936. The high altarpiece is a work in coloured marble brought from Genoa in 1691. At its centre is the Virgin of the Rosary, patron saint of Cádiz, who replaced the image lost in 1936. The convent also preserves a Baroque cloister of 1660, with four white marble wells bearing Dominican and Franciscan coats of arms. It is on Calle Santo Domingo, in the old town.
