Church of San Juan de Dios
This is the church attached to the Hospital of San Juan de Dios, in the heart of the Pópulo district, with its façade on the square of the same name and right up against the Town Hall. The exterior was thoroughly remodelled in the early 19th century. At the corner where the two façades meet stands the tower, dating from 1768, the work of Torcuato Cayón. The plan is unusual: a Greek cross inscribed in a square, with a dome over the crossing and groin vaults over the four arms. The high altarpiece is Baroque, from 1688, in gilded wood with Solomonic columns; its central part was remodelled in Neoclassical style in 1791 by Torcuato Benjumeda. In the main niche stands the Virgin of Buen Suceso, from the 18th century, flanked by polychrome sculptures of Saint Raphael and Saint Charles Borromeo, and in the attic there is a Baroque image of Saint John of God. As it is a working church, visiting the interior depends on opening hours and services.
