Gadir Archaeological Site
Beneath the building of the Teatro de Títeres de la Tía Norica, on Calle San Miguel and next to the Central Market, a fragment of Gadir is preserved, the city founded by the Phoenicians at the western end of the Mediterranean. The excavations uncovered eight houses built of earth in the 9th century BC, arranged on both sides of two streets paved with pebbles. On top of them were also found the remains of a Roman fish-salting factory, proof that the site continued to be occupied centuries later. The tour revolves around Mattan, a Phoenician who died in a fire in the 6th century BC and whose story serves as a thread to understand how people lived in that district. The visit is made in guided sessions that leave every hour on the hour and is walked along a glass walkway that leaves the remains in view.
