Royal Chapel of Our Lady of Pópulo
The chapel occupies the upper floor of the former Puerta del Mar of the medieval wall, now known as the Arco del Pópulo, in the Pópulo quarter. A painting of the Virgen del Pópulo by Antonio Franco was placed there and gained popular devotion; in 1596 the occupying troops fired at it. In 1621 the construction of an upper chapel began between the two towers flanking the passage. The one you see today dates from 1868, built after the structural problems that appeared in 1846. It has a square nave with false rib vaults and a rectangular presbytery; the entrance is a large semicircular arch on Tuscan columns. The high altarpiece, of carved and decorated wood, is Baroque and was made by Alejandro de Saavedra in the mid-17th century; it was originally designed only for paintings, and in the 18th century the images of Saint Joseph and Saint Staturius were added at the sides.
