Church of La Merced
The church belonged to the convent of the Discalced Mercedarians, founded in 1629 at the request of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia, protectors of the order. Of the complex only the main façade and the tower survive, after the destruction caused by the confiscations. The tower has a square plan, with Tuscan pilasters and a hemispherical dome with a lantern. The frontispiece has two levels: on the first, Tuscan pilasters and a broken curved pediment; on the second, a relief of the Virgen de la Merced. Inside there is a polychrome wooden altarpiece from the Capuchin chapel, attributed to Torcuato Cayón around 1770. Several Holy Week brotherhoods set out from this parish, among them Sentencia, El Perdón and La Sed. It stands in Plaza de la Merced, in the Santa María quarter, where the Centro Municipal de Arte Flamenco is also found, housed in a former market.
