The Castelo dos Mouros is a fortification on one of the peaks of the Sintra hills, founded in the 10th century during the Muslim occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. Its walls follow the terrain, with granite blocks fitted between crags and rocks, and can be walked along the wall walk. From there you can see the town, the Pena Palace and, in the distance, the Atlantic. The enclosure preserves the Royal Tower, the cistern, the keep, the Parade Ground, the Treason Gate, silos, an Islamic settlement, the church of São Pedro de Canaferrim, a medieval Christian necropolis and the old stables. You get there from the centre of Sintra by climbing up the hills, and the visit includes stretches of steep steps.
