Bodegas Tío Pepe (González Byass)
González Byass was born in Jerez in 1835, founded by Manuel María González Ángel, and its bodegas occupy a site so large that it includes inner streets that used to be public. The visit lasts an hour and a half, is held in Spanish, English or German, includes a train ride through vineyards and gardens, and ends with a tasting of two wines. Along the way you pass vine-covered streets, courtyards, gardens and warehouses with more than 180 years of history. Calle Ciegos, cobbled and covered with vines, is one of its best-known images. The bodega's weathervane is listed as the largest in the world. The Gran Bodega Tío Pepe is the work of Eduardo Torroja, designed in 1960 and built between 1961 and 1964 with concrete vaults. The Real Bodega de La Concha, built in honour of Isabella II, has traditionally been attributed to Gustave Eiffel. The entrance is at Calle Manuel María González, number 12.
