Jerez de la Frontera Cathedral
Jerez de la Frontera Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Our Lord San Salvador, is a 17th-century building that combines Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical styles. It stands on the remains of the original Great Mosque of Jerez and the old church of El Salvador. Its Gothic interior, with five aisles of unequal height, houses works of art such as the Virgen Niña by Francisco de Zurbarán, the Cristo de la Viga (a late Gothic crucifix from the end of the 15th century) and a silver processional monstrance from 1951. The cathedral museum also displays the old choir stalls, the painting of the Virgen de Guía, and silverwork and sacred vestments from the 18th and 19th centuries. The bell tower, separate from the main building, is Gothic-Mudéjar in style in its lower part and Baroque in the upper part; since 2019 it has been possible to climb it to enjoy one of the most impressive views of the city and see up close its eight historic bells, among them La Gorda (1566) and Santa Águeda (1510). The tower also houses a wooden rattle (matraca) unique in Spain for its size and shape. The cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Asidonia-Jerez and has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest since 1931.
