Church of Saint-Séverin
Gothic church in the Latin Quarter, in the 5th arrondissement, between rue Saint-Séverin and rue Saint-Jacques. It takes its name from Saint Séverin, a hermit who lived on this spot in the 6th century and died around 540. Work began around 1230 in classical Gothic, contemporary with Notre-Dame, and after a fire in 1448 it was rebuilt in Flamboyant Gothic between the 15th and 17th centuries. It was the parish church of the University of Paris. The lower part of the tower preserves 13th-century work and was completed in 1487. Inside, the highlight is the double ambulatory with a twisted central pillar that looks like a stone palm tree. The modern stained glass by Jean René Bazaine, made between 1964 and 1970, is inspired by the Catholic sacraments. There is also 19th-century stained glass by Émile Hirsch. The main organ was installed in 1963, with four keyboards and 59 stops, and its carved wooden case dates from 1745.
