Igreja do Carmo
The Igreja do Carmo was built by the Third Order of Carmel between 1756 and 1768, to a design by the architect José Figueiredo Seixas, in the Baroque style with Rococo features. It stands next to the Praça de Carlos Alberto, near the Clérigos Tower. Its most photographed feature is the azulejo panel on the side façade, drawn by Silvestre Silvestri and painted by Carlos Branco in 1912, with scenes of the founding of the Carmelite Order and of Mount Carmel. Attached to it is the Carmelitas church and, between the two, the Casa Escondida, a house barely more than a metre and a half wide that was built because two adjoining churches were not allowed. The ensemble has been a National Monument since 2013. The paid circuit includes the church, the Casa Escondida, the sacristy, the historic rooms and the catacombs, and lasts between 30 and 45 minutes.
