The former Cadeia e Tribunal da Relação of Porto was begun in 1767 to a design by the architect Eugénio dos Santos e Carvalho and the works lasted almost thirty years. The granite building housed both the appeal court and the prison, split almost equally. Among its prisoners were the bandit Zé do Telhado and the writer Camilo Castelo Branco, who wrote part of his work here; Ana Plácido was also held on the top floor. In 1902 an anthropometric post with a photographic section was installed. The court moved out in 1937 and the prison closed in April 1974. After decades of decay, from 2000 it was adapted as the Centro Português de Fotografia in a project by Eduardo Souto Moura and Humberto Vieira. It is on Largo Amor de Perdição, next to the Clérigos Tower, and today houses exhibitions and a photographic archive.
