New Museum
CultureVisit: ~90 min
Museum devoted exclusively to contemporary art, founded in 1977 by Marcia Tucker. Its current home is at 235 Bowery, in a building opened in 2007 and designed by the Japanese studio SANAA: a stack of white boxes offset from one another, clad in metal mesh. It is the only contemporary art museum in Manhattan built from the ground up, and it tends to programme emerging artists and unconventional themed exhibitions.
