Barranda Ethnic Music Museum

CultureVisit: ~90 minFrom €3

The Barranda Ethnic Music Museum houses a collection of musical instruments from 145 countries, gathered by the ethnomusicologist Carlos Blanco Fadol since the 1970s. The exhibition is organised thematically, showing instruments in their original contexts such as religion, slavery, magic, war, courtship or the imitation of natural sounds. One section is devoted to instruments adapted for people with physical or mental disabilities. The gamelan orchestra from Indonesia stands out, made up of some thirty polychrome bamboo instruments. The building, designed by the architect Jesús Carballal, includes distinctive features such as a raised auditorium, a ship's chain that produces sounds with rainwater and a waterwheel that generates traditional melodies. The museum is complemented by activities such as concerts and is located in Barranda, a village known for its tradition of traditional singing and the festival of the Cuadrillas.
