Blaues Wunder Bridge (Loschwitzer Brücke)

CultureVisit: ~30 minFree

The Blaues Wunder, officially the Loschwitzer Brücke, links Blasewitz and Loschwitz across the Elbe. It opened on 15 July 1893 under the name König-Albert-Brücke, in honour of the King of Saxony, until 1912. It is a riveted steel lattice structure 280 metres long and about 12 metres wide, designed by the engineer Claus Köpcke, with a main span of more than 140 metres. It was one of the first European works of that span with no piers in the water. Its nickname comes from the blue it was painted and also from the German expression ein blaues Wunder erleben, meaning to get an unpleasant surprise. Today it is crossed by pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles of up to 15 tonnes, and until 1985 the tram ran across it. Nearby, on Körnerplatz, the funicular and the Loschwitz suspension railway depart.
