The museum occupies the former headquarters of the velvet-weavers' guild, at Calle del Hospital, 7. The guild's ordinances were drawn up in 1477, the building was acquired in 1494 and in 1686 Charles II raised the corporation to the Colegio del Arte Mayor de la Seda. The house mixes 15th-century Gothic elements, such as a spiral staircase, with 18th-century Baroque alterations and tiles of that period. On the portal, a stone with a cardinal's hat alludes to Saint Jerome, patron of the college. The Hall of Fame stands out, with a ceramic floor and a ceiling fresco by José Vergara, as does a chapel with diagonally laid tilework. Old looms, tools and fabrics are displayed, and the oldest and most extensive guild archive in Europe is kept here. It reopened as a museum in June 2016 after a restoration.
