The museum is in the Palace of the Marqués de Dos Aguas, in the historic centre. It began as a Gothic house of the Rabassa de Perellós family in the 15th century; in 1699 the family obtained the marquisate and around 1740 the major Rococo remodelling was undertaken. The alabaster portal, designed by Hipólito Rovira and sculpted by Ignacio Vergara, shows two atlantes representing rivers and two jets of water alluding to the noble title. The State bought the palace in 1949, and the museum, which stems from the donation of Manuel González Martí and his wife, opened to the public in 1954; it underwent another restoration between 1990 and 1998. Inside are displayed ceramics from Paterna and Manises, 18th-century pieces from the Real Fábrica de Alcora, and decorative arts. On the ground floor, the carriage courtyard holds the Carroza de las Ninfas (Chariot of the Nymphs), from 1753. The rooms preserve marble floors bearing the initials MD.
