Tennōji Zoo
Tennōji Zoo, opened in 1915, is the third-oldest zoo in Japan and is located in Tennōji Park, Osaka. It covers 11 hectares and has a variety of themed areas: the African Savanna, with habitats where predators such as lions and hyenas appear to share space with their prey; the IFAR Reptile House; Elephant Village, with Asian elephants; the Friendship Garden, where visitors can interact with domestic animals such as goats, guinea pigs, Noma horses, sheep and alpacas; the Night House, the only zoo in Japan to keep kiwis; the Chimpanzee House, opened in spring 2025; the World of Birds, opened in November 2023; and the Marine Animal Area, with Humboldt penguins, California sea lions and polar bears. It also has a free-flight aviary for waterfowl. The zoo is accessible via several metro, train and tram lines. Some tourist reviews mention unsanitary conditions and small enclosures, and in 2024 concerns were raised about the kiwi enclosure.
