Pena Palace (Palácio da Pena)
The Pena Palace crowns one of the peaks of the Sintra hills, surrounded by forest and paths. It is the great work of Portuguese Romanticism and was created by Ferdinand II, the 'artist king', who gave the building colourful facades and a very striking mix of styles. Inside you can visit rooms such as the Great Hall, the Stag Room, the kitchen and the Manueline Cloister, and outside there are terraces, the Arches Courtyard and a parapet walk with views. The surrounding park has the Valley of the Lakes, the Camellia Garden, the Queen's Fern Garden, the Temple of Columns, the High Cross and the chalet and garden of the Countess of Edla. You get there from Sintra's historic centre, and between the park entrance and the palace there is a fair stretch uphill.
