Berlin Zoo
Berlin Zoo, founded in 1844, is Germany's oldest zoo and holds one of the most complete species collections in the world, with more than 20,000 animals of around 1,380 species. Visitors can explore 33 hectares in the Tiergarten district and discover iconic facilities such as the Berlin Aquarium (1913), the Panda Garden (2017) with giant pandas, the Affenhaus (primate house) with great apes, the Nachttierhaus (nocturnal animal house) and the Bärenfelsen. The zoo also has historic gates such as the Elephant Gate (Elefantentor) and the Lion Gate (Löwentor), and offers animal feeding displays, educational talks and guided tours. It is the most visited zoo in Europe, with more than 3.5 million visitors a year, and takes an active part in international conservation and breeding programmes for endangered species.
