Berlin Aquarium

The Berlin Aquarium, opened in 1913 as part of the Berlin Zoological Garden complex, is one of the largest aquariums in Germany and has been ranked among the public aquariums with the greatest biodiversity in the world. It is home to more than 9,000 animals spread across three floors, with jellyfish, tropical and native fish, crocodilians (alligators and gharials), a wide range of insects, 250 tanks for fish, amphibians and reptiles such as tuataras, and a shark tank with blacktip reef sharks. In addition, twelve basins with a total capacity of 25,000 litres present different sections of the coral world, with the highlight being the 11-cubic-metre Great Coral Basin and its breeding lagoon. The institution takes an active part in international marine conservation programmes and is presented as one of the best-known aquariums in Europe.
