Iglesia de San Lorenzo

CultureVisit: ~30 min

San Lorenzo stands in the square of the same name, in the neighbourhood of the same name, on the site of the old mosque of al-Mughira. After the Christian conquest of Córdoba in 1236, the church was built in the second half of the 13th century, and it blends late Romanesque, proto-Gothic, Alfonsine and Mudéjar elements. It has three aisles, with no transept, and a portico of three pointed arches with a Gothic-Mudéjar rose window. The tower was built on the minaret of the mosque, whose remains can be seen in the main body; Hernán Ruiz II added the three upper sections in the 16th century, in a style that anticipates the Giralda of Seville. In the apse are preserved 14th-century paintings in the Italian Gothic style, with seven scenes from the life of Christ, and the main Baroque altarpiece now stands at the back, next to the baptismal font. In front of the church, the Fountain of the Fawn has commemorated the poet Ibn Hazm since 1963.
