New Garden (Neuer Garten)
The Neuer Garten is a park of about 102 hectares in the north of Potsdam, beside the Jungfernsee and the Heiliger See. Frederick William II had it laid out from 1787, soon after coming to the throne, and wanted it to be the opposite of the geometric Baroque of Sanssouci: it was designed by the gardener Johann August Eyserbeck, trained at Wörlitz, with meadows, winding paths and buildings scattered among the trees. Between 1787 and 1792 the Marmorpalais, the Gotische Bibliothek and the Pyramid were built, the last serving as an underground icehouse. In 1816 Peter Joseph Lenné reworked it with grand vistas and views towards the neighbouring gardens. The Marmorpalais, of red brick with Silesian marble details and a circular belvedere, rises directly on the shore of the Heiliger See, with a terrace towards the water designed for landing from boats. The park also contains Cecilienhof, from 1913-1917, which has its own entry.
