Alexandrowka Russian Colony (Alexandrowka Museum)
Alexandrowka is a colony of Russian-style wooden houses in the north of Potsdam, built between 1826 and 1828 on the orders of King Frederick William III of Prussia. He raised it in memory of his friend Tsar Alexander I, who died in 1825, and to house the last twelve Russian singers from a choir of 62 soldiers captured in Russia in 1812. The complex has twelve farmsteads, a two-storey lodge and a house next to the church, and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin. The museum opened in 2005 in house no. 2, dating from 1826: six rooms with information panels and Biedermeier-style furniture, two films of about 30 minutes each and a garden designed by Lenné with old fruit varieties. On the nearby Kapellenberg hill stands the Alexander Nevsky Orthodox church, consecrated in 1829.
