The national museum of modern and contemporary art occupies the former 18th-century Hospital General de San Carlos, extended with Ian Ritchie's glass lifts and Jean Nouvel's building. Its centrepiece is Picasso's Guernica, which arrived in Spain in 1981, and the collection also brings together Dalí, Miró, Juan Gris, Maruja Mallo and the 20th-century avant-garde.
