Fontana dell'Acqua Paola (Il Fontanone)
CultureVisit: ~15 min
Large monumental fountain on the Janiculum, next to San Pietro in Montorio, built in 1612 by Paul V to a design by Giovanni Fontana and Flaminio Ponzio. It restored the Trajan aqueduct, with water from a spring near Lake Bracciano. It has five arches and five jets that fall into a basin, and marble said to come from the ruins of a nearby temple of Minerva. It inspired the Trevi Fountain and opens the film The Great Beauty.
