Square at the foot of the Croix-Rousse hill, surrounded by the 17th-century Hôtel de Ville, the Palais Saint-Pierre, home of the Museum of Fine Arts, and several historic buildings. In the centre is the monumental fountain by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, creator of the Statue of Liberty, inaugurated in 1892: a chariot drawn by four horses symbolising rivers.
