Archaeological Museum of Córdoba
The museum occupies the Páez de Castillejo palace, in Plaza de Jerónimo Páez, and a newly built annexe. It was founded in 1868 as the Provincial Archaeological Museum, moved between several sites and settled in the palace in 1959. The current complex, with the extension completed in 2009, was opened on 31 January 2011. The route runs from Prehistory to the Middle Ages and arranges the rooms by theme: Roman Córdoba of Colonia Patricia Corduba on the upper floor, daily life, beliefs and funerary rites, and leisure and entertainment. In the basement are preserved remains of the city's Roman theatre. Among its roughly 33,500 inventoried pieces are the Fawn of Medina Azahara, the Stele of Ategua, the Lion of Nueva Carteya, the Crouching Aphrodite, the Early Christian Sarcophagus and the Mitre of Cabra. It is right in the old town, a few minutes' walk from the Mosque-Cathedral.
