A funicular opened in 1892, the work of engineer Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard, which climbs the steep Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo between Rua de São Paulo and Largo do Calhariz. Its yellow cars and the view of the street with the Tagus at the end have made it one of the most photographed sights in Lisbon. It is a declared national monument.
