Camões Monument
On the Praça de Luís de Camões, in the Chiado neighbourhood, stands this monument inaugurated in 1867. The central figure is a bronze statue of Luís de Camões, 4 metres tall and weighing about 9.7 tonnes, depicting him at the age of 50 in court dress, holding an unsheathed sword in his right hand and a copy of 'Os Lusíadas' against his chest with his left; at his feet lie a cuirass and a pile of books. The pedestal, of lioz limestone and 7.48 metres high, has eight faces, and at each corner stands a 4-metre statue representing prominent figures of Portuguese culture from the Age of Discovery: the historian Fernão Lopes, the cosmographer Pedro Nunes, the chroniclers Gomes Eanes de Zurara, João de Barros and Fernão Lopes de Castanheda, and the epic poets Vasco Mouzinho de Quevedo, Jerónimo Corte-Real and Francisco de Sá de Meneses. The monument was sculpted by Victor Bastos and has been the scene of patriotic demonstrations since the late 19th century.
