The Grossmünster is the twin-towered Protestant church that dominates the right bank of the Limmat, in Zurich's old town. It was built over the graves of the city's patron saints, Felix and Regula, and was a collegiate church of Augustinian canons; tradition attributes its foundation, and that of the city's first school of higher education, to Charlemagne. His statue stands in the south tower, which is why it is called the Karlsturm. From the nave, 187 steps climb to a platform with six large panoramic windows over the old town and the lake; the outdoor terraces are closed for safety reasons. Inside, the highlights are the choir stained glass by Augusto Giacometti, the windows by Sigmar Polke and the Romanesque crypt. The doorway has bronze doors by Otto Münch, and a Reformation museum operates in the cloister. The church stands on Zwingliplatz, next to Limmatquai.
