Lindenhof
The Lindenhof is a hill with a square in Zurich's old town, on the left bank of the Limmat. There was once a Roman fort here; a 2nd-century Roman gravestone found in 1747 is the oldest attestation of the name Turicum. In the 9th century a royal residence was built for Louis the German, which fell into ruin and was used as a quarry in the 13th century. In 1798 citizens swore an oath to the constitution of the Helvetic Republic on this square. On the south side stands a Masonic lodge building, dating from 1851. Today the square is a meeting place for fans of giant chess. From the viewpoint you can see the Grossmünster, the town hall, the Limmat, the university and the ETH. It adjoins St Peter's Church.
